Real-life room escape games are a type of physical adventure game in which people are technically locked in a room with other participants and have to use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles, find clues, and escape the room within 30 or 60 minutes depending on the room.
Escape rooms are a perfect adventure for all kinds of people — whether you're a hardcore puzzle-solver, a curious explorer, or just someone looking for a fun night out. You don’t need any special knowledge or experience to enjoy yourself; everything you need to succeed is already inside the room, waiting to be discovered.
Some players are great at spotting hidden details. Others are amazing at cracking riddles, keeping track of information, or thinking outside the box. Every skill set matters — and working together is half the fun.
Escape rooms are also a fantastic choice for tourists. They offer a hands-on, unforgettable experience that’s totally different from traditional sightseeing. Whether you’re new in town or a local looking for a fresh adventure, an escape room lets you step into a story, solve a mystery, and create memories you'll talk about long after you escape.
Whether you’re competitive, creative, curious, or just in it for the laughs, there’s a place for you here.
If you’ve never done an escape room before, you’re doing yourself a huge favor by starting now. Escape rooms are a blast and extremely addictive — but your first time might be a little confusing as you learn what you’re looking for and how everything works.
We have some basic advice listed below for first-timers and seasoned pros, but here’s the general rundown:
Before your game begins, your Game Master will give you a quick briefing. They'll explain the rules (the main one: don’t be destructive), how to call for hints, and how you’ll ultimately escape the room. They’ll also give you a “first clue” — this might be a hint about what to look for first, or it might lead you directly to your first puzzle or key.
Inside the room, you’ll find lots of locks, puzzles, and clues scattered around. Your goal? Unlock everything and escape the room before time runs out.
How will you unlock these locks?
Come find out!
Make sure you communicate — you'll hear this before you enter just about every room, and for good reason.
You have to tell your group members if you've solved a puzzle, if you need help, or if you've found a clue. Imagine you have a box that won’t open until you input a five-letter word, and meanwhile your friend found a secret passage in a book with a five-letter word circled. If you’re not talking to each other, you’ll never connect those two pieces.
Pro Tip: It might be smart to assign a leader who keeps track of everything that’s happening.
Keeping track of your items and clues is crucial.
Not only does this mean keeping the room tidy, but also grouping similar items together.
If you find several pieces with letters or numbers on them, you’ll probably need to use them together — and you won't realize it if they’re scattered around.
Pro Tip: Create a "solved" pile for puzzles and items you’ve already used, so you don’t accidentally waste time reworking them.
Observation is everything.
When you first enter the room, check out all the locks: are you looking for a 4-digit number, a 5-letter word, or something color-based? Knowing what codes you need will help you recognize important clues.
When it comes to riddles, don’t overthink! Many clues are simpler than they seem. Look carefully for anything that stands out — bold text, colors, symbols, unusual formatting.
Pro Tip: Check everywhere you’re allowed to: under, behind, inside. Small clues can be hidden in the smallest places!
